Hey you! I've got a quick question: do you know what SPF stands for? If you do, you're amazing, *high-five* and if you don't, it's okay I didn't know until recently either and so I am pleased to inform you that SPF simply stands for:
...and we both know that SPF is directly related to sunscreen but those numbers, the ones on the bottle, they have to do with the length of time your skin will be protected. In other words:
"Imagine that your skin normally begins to burn after 10 minutes in full sun without any protection. A 30 SPF sunscreen would provide 30 times the protection of no sunscreen. That means 30 times longer before you start to burn, or in this case, 300 minutes."
Important stuff right? I mean, I think we should all be aware of what we need to do to protect ourselves, yet when it comes to sunscreen in certain communities, the idea alone is shunned because well, if you're darker you don't need sunscreen right?
W R O N G
The truth is we A L L, regardless of skin tone, need sunscreen. Sunscreen helps to protect our skin. Now we're not here to make anyone feel bad or excluded, but rather here to inform you and remind you that you deserve to both look and feel beautiful. Where does that begin? First, with being aware and second, by taking those keys and putting them into action. That being said, we've partnered with BlackGirlSunscreen to say:
"Stay Moisturized + Protect Your Skin "
A slogan you've been hearing if you've been following us for a while and we passionately stand behind BGS as a movement. A woman of color simply saw a need and decided to provide the solution. Now we say simply loosely, the struggle is real when it comes to the beauty industry, but we're soaking up all we can from the lovely Shontay Lundy as she walks us through her journey. Made of all natural ingredients, BGS has carrot seed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, avocado, and shea butter and is eco-friendly and cruelty-free. Oh and guess what? There's no white residue, meaning that unflattering, ashy look -- yea, wave goodbye to it and say "no, no not today" because the idea behind BGS is not just solving a problem, but in fact making a quality product all around. BlackGirlSunscreen has no white residue, and is both fragrance and oil free, making it both face and makeup-friendly. Need proof? Click here.
Challenge: Now that you've got the keys, go check out our series with BGS on Youtube and send us your questions, comments or concerns. We want to connect with you and help you feel confident in your own skin. If you're all caught up on our content, pay it forward by sharing what you know with others.
As BGS says:"Friends don’t let friends go out looking ghostly!"
